Plant history
Chamomile originated in Europe and West Asia (Bisset 1994) and since ancient times, it has been highly valued by the Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks for its medicinal properties. The Egyptians considered the plant sacred and believed it was a gift from the God of the Sun.
Chamomile's earliest recorded use goes back much further: according to the Eber's Papyrus, dated to 1550 BC, ancient Egyptians used the herb to honour the gods, embalm the dead and cure the sick. In Europe, medicinal use of Chamomile has been recorded since the 1st century AD.
Plant Identification
- Origin: Egypt
- Growth: 1 to 3 feet tall.
- Plant family: Asteraceae (Daisy-like flowers of the Asteraceae plant family)
- Scent: Releases a pleasant, apple scent when walked upon.
- Colour: White, yellow
- Harvesting: In spring and summer, gather leaves to use fresh or to dry for later use. Pick fully open, fresh blossoms early in the day, rinsing and patting dry.
