The Application of Kambo

Kambo is traditionally applied through small, superficial burns made on the top layer of the skin using a small special vine (Tamishi). This enables a tiny layer of surface skin to be peeled back, revealing the epidermis. These points, often called “gates,” allow the secretion to enter the lymphatic system & bloodstream. Once in the body, Kambo’s unique bioactive peptides can cross the blood-brain barrier, initiating a powerful cascade of physiological responses.

When the medicine is placed on the burn sites, a sensation often described as skin burning or tingling will occur and subside after a few moments. It may take up to a few minutes to feel the effects of Kambo after one initial test point, which is used to gauge an individual's reaction to the secretion.  

The most common initial feeling is a sensation of heat in the body. The body will heat up & the skin, particularly the face and chest, will flush. The heart rate will likely accelerate as blood pressure increases. There may be ringing in the ears or an increased awareness of the heartbeat as if the beat is “in the ears.” This rapid heartbeat & increase in blood pressure will be followed by a drop in blood pressure. The skin can become pale at this time, & one may feel faint. This is a brief occurrence, usually of less than a minute, and has been referred to as pleasurable by many, as it provides a reprieve from the momentary discomfort of the experience.

The blood pressure will return to normal after a very short time, sometimes less than five minutes & nausea and purging will likely follow. The purging can begin with mostly water, as two litters are consumed just before receiving the points. After the water has been mostly purged, it is common to see yellow bile. After several minutes, the purge may become more of a thick, sweet bile with less water & soon after, the Kambo mixture can be removed from the points.

Depending on the individual, bile colour can vary, though the most common is close to neon or an orange shade of yellow. This process typically takes twenty to forty minutes to complete. Once the practitioner removes the Kambo carefully, one will likely recalibrate rapidly & the effects will diminish. However, it is still possible to experience purging by sweat, tears, vomit, or through the bowels.

The Kambo process is brief but often intense. It takes genuine courage for individuals to return to it, whether as a primary healing practice or as supportive therapy alongside other treatments because it is not easy. However, it does get easier the longer you take it. Many people are deterred by misleading information on the internet that seems only to show the worst and most extreme cases. Vittorio Erspamer, an Italian pharmacologist from the University of Rome twice nominated for the Nobel Prize, pioneered analysing Kambo in a controlled laboratory setting. Through his research, he deduced that Kambo encompasses a"remarkable chemical blend with potential medical applications unparalleled by any other amphibian." Researchers have discovered 27 peptides from 8 peptide families.
