Nettle use has been recorded as far back as the Bronze Age (3000 BCE – 1200 BCE), and it is still used in herbalism today. Between 58 and 45 BCE, there are records of Nettle's stinging properties assisting Julius Caesar's troops in helping them stay awake and alert during the night.

Ancient Egyptians used stinging nettle to treat arthritis and lower back pain, while Roman troops rubbed it on themselves to help stay warm

  • Origin: Europe
  • Growth: Nettles often grows to about 2 metres (6.5 feet) in height. 
  • Plant family: Urticaceae
  • Scent: Good quality nettles scent is faint and herbaceous. Nettle leaf that smells musty is of poor quality.
  • Colour: Green
  • Harvesting: Stinging nettle grows from early spring through the summer. The best time to harvest them is while they're still a small, no more than a foot tall, because that's when the leaves are the most tender. The leaves are best harvested while they're still young and before the plant starts flowering.
  • Endangered: Not endangered.
